Shipwrecks as Memory – a case study from Malta by Prof. Timmy Gambin

19 November 2026 – 19:00 – 20:30 – Fort St Elmo, Mediterranean Street, Valletta, Malta

Join us for the public lecture ‘Shipwrecks as Memory – A case study from Malta’ by Prof. Timmy Gambin, on the 19th of November at Fort St Elmo from 7:00 pm onwards.

The world’s seas and oceans are replete with shipwrecks, the majority of which date to WWII. Maltese territorial waters are no exception, with both ships and submarines, but the islands’ seabed also contains a large concentration of aircraft from at least four nations.

Whether marked by a large loss of life or possibly no losses at all, each of these sites has a human dimension. Each person involved has a story, and each story must be considered through the variations brought about by oral transmission. A single wrecking event could have been witnessed by several survivors, as well as those who took part in their rescue. Moreover, one must keep in mind the narratives of relatives – both those who never returned and those who survived.

This lecture draws on experiences from Maltese waters, though choices had to be made about which examples to include. We will explore how historical events are informed by material remains and how these remains contribute to narratives for both the living and the dead. Moreover, the lecture will seek to understand what role, if any, shipwrecks play in the memorialisation of events and their human agents.

Write like an Egyptian

heritage, malta, events, happening, to do, things, program, where, go, gay, guide, malta, gozo, november, summer

28 November 2026 – 13:00 – 16:30 – National Museum of Archaeology, Auberge de Provence, Republic Street, Valletta, Malta

On Saturday, 28th November, join us at the National Museum of Archaeology for ‘Write like an Egyptian’, an interactive family workshop forming part of Heritage Malta’s Student Passport Programme, where participants will explore the fascinating world of ancient Egyptian writing.

Parents and children will discover the role of shabti figurines in funerary practices and learn how inscriptions on these objects provide clues about ancient Egyptian beliefs and the afterlife.

The session will start with a guided tour of the exhibition ‘Living for Eternity: The Ancient Egyptians’, followed by a hands-on activity. Participants will explore how signs could represent sounds, words and ideas, and how names could be written using this ancient script.

The workshop concludes with a practical activity in which participants model their own shabti figurine in clay and inscribe it with a representation of their name, inspired by ancient Egyptian examples.

Two sessions will be held, from 13:00 to 14:30 and from 15:00 to 16:30, with a maximum capacity of 15 participants each.

Tickets cost €15 and are available online at Store – Heritage Malta and at all Heritage Malta museums and sites.
