Inspired by History: From Tapestries to Contemporary Fashion

27 June – 30 August 2026 – 10:00 – 18:00 – Grand Master’s Palace, Valleta, Malta

Heritage Malta invites visitors to experience Inspired by History: From Tapestries to Contemporary Fashion, an exhibition celebrating the much-anticipated return of the historic Grand Master’s Palace tapestries to Malta, alongside contemporary fashion creations by Charles & Ron inspired by the tapestries.

The Elephant

Commissioned in 1708 by Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful from the renowned Gobelins Manufactory in Paris, the tapestries were created as part of his gioia, a gift to the Order upon his election. Depicting exotic scenes of flora and fauna from lands newly discovered in the preceding century, these magnificent works have been treasured within the Grand Master’s Palace since 1710.

Following their restoration at De Wit in Belgium, the tapestries return to the Palace as the only complete surviving set woven from the original cartoons of the celebrated Tenture des Indes, also associated with the French Royal Palace of Versailles.

Charles & Ron Dress

The exhibition presents a contemporary interpretation of this remarkable artistic legacy through fashion pieces by Charles & Ron, inspired by the tapestries themselves, including one dress to be donated to the national collection managed by Heritage Malta.

Experience the return of the tapestries and discover how their legacy continues to inspire contemporary fashion through this exhibition.

Inspired by History: From Tapestries to Contemporary Fashion runs until the end of August 2026, and admission is included in the Grand Master’s Palace experience. The palace opens from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30.
